Real men do it holding their breath!

Hanging around on the bottom of swimming pools is becoming a normal thing for me in my role as president of the Geelong Underwater Hockey club. You never know who you might meet down there in the murky depths while holding your breath!

Last weekend I was involvled in a trip across to Gippsland taking our junior players over to a competition held at the Leongatha Leisure centre, and hosted by our old rivals, the Wonthaggi Underwater Hockey club. We are trying to get the momentum rolling to put together a Victorian Junior team to compete in the Australian Championships in Tasmania over the Summer holidays in January. On behalf of the Victorian UWH commission I have been investigating possabilities of holding the try outs here in Geelong, and I think I have found a suitable venue which should make all our Geelong players happy, and maybe give them an edge in the competition!

But last weekend was a blast as we also had an “all in” round robin style competition and my team, the Sharks came second so I brought home a silver medal. Not bad for a slow out of condition lump like me! It was great to catch up with old faces and see them with their mask and snorkles off as we all enjoyed a few beers and dinner togther at the local pub.

We then chaporoned the juniors to the local cinema to see a movie I would never choose myself, “Snow White and the Huntsman” which turned out to be quite deep and dark. It was the old story told in a more modern way with fantastic special effects and I actually enjoyed it after realising it wasn’t really a kids movie. A great weekend in all, and we are planning to repay their hospitality with a return match here in Geelong mid October.

If you want to know more about this crazy game, like how adults can play with kids without the kids getting hurt, and the more experienced adults can use cunning to outsmart the fast nimble kids, check out the “tab” at the top of this page or our club website….

    Cheers
